Our client asked that we design a cottage to live in; the street view has that appeal, while from the water side the home’s many decks and rooms take full advantage of the beautiful views from this challenging site.  Located on a waterfront lot in Friday Harbor, the design takes advantage of its prime location: the site has a private dock with room for multiple boats and is situated within walking distance of downtown Friday Harbor. For the client, it was important to utilize the natural features while also creating a home that would allow aging in place; the three-level house is equipped with an elevator that services all floors from the level garage entry.  The rooms within the home are multi-purposed to take advantage of the space: the kitchen features a built-in work desk and the lower-level acts as guest quarters as well as a quiet workspace separate from the rest of the home.  There is also a woodworking shop located under the garage; situated so that the client can enter the master bath after working without carrying dust through the rest of the home.  The design of this home successfully highlights its beautiful location while also satisfying the client’s requests.
