A Planted Roof - Residence on the Oregon Coast
By planting this roof we are able to satisfy more than one of our goals.
- The rain storm run off from the roof is delayed and in that way we reduce the discharge out to the ocean shore during storms.
- The storm water is filtered through the plantings and soil which increases the water quality at the discharge point
- The roof of the home now appears as a beautiful garden space from the highway. This is possible as the highway is about 15 feet higher than the front door of the home, making the roof garden in line with the level of the eyes of a car passenger.
- The soils and the plantings provide additional insulation value for the roof structure, further reducing the homes energy demand.
